A Nurturing Spirit
Up until a lengthy visit to Texas a few years ago, I didn’t know
much about my new sister-in-law. I knew that my brother had
met her, and married her, and then swept her off on a cruise,
an event for which I received pictures in my e-mail.

“Well, I hope she has the gift,” I told my sister Judy. “Maybe
she can find a way into his heart. Lord knows there’ve been a
few that have tried, and failed.”

This was 5 or 6 years ago. During my visit in 2005 I had a
chance to really get to know her, and I gotta tell you, unless she’
s a consummate actress, she’s truly one of the nicest people I
have ever met.
I have yet to know her to say the wrong
thing, or snipe or gossip about anybody, which
makes her a better person than I am. Linda
and my brother, Jim, seem to go together
like biscuits and gravy. She’s the Yin to his
Yang. She thinks he could lasso a star, and
he would wear his arm out trying, if she
asked him to.

As time has gone by, it has become clear, at
least to me, what he sees in her. She’s a
nurturer, and she’s got grit, and ambition,
which is an unlikely combination.

When they bought their property a few
years back it had nothing on it but deer,
scrub vegetation, and more than the average
number of rabbits. Together they lived in
everything from a tent to a camper, and
ultimately, the bare bones of the house they
were building, but all the while, Linda kept
her green thumb primed by planting, and
potting and gathering seeds. I’m not sure if
she planned to eventually turn her talents
into a business, but that’s what she’s done.
Over the years of hard work she has taken a few pots and turned them into what you see in the pictures above … a fully
functional, thriving, seed and plant supply. Aside from her dedication to presenting the highest possible quality merchandise,
she is determined to provide the highest degree of customer service. I was talking with my sister Judy on the phone one
afternoon when Linda had gotten a bad rating from a single E-Bay customer and you would have thought that the sky had
fallen.

“It wasn’t her fault,” Judy said, defending Linda, “the woman didn’t follow the directions she was given, and she’s trying to
blame Linda.”
“How’s Linda taking it?”

“Not well.”

“I figured as much,” I said, laughing.

In the end, Linda has accomplished a great
deal. She’s found her way into my brother’s
heart, found her place in our family, and
has managed to build and maintain her
business and I couldn’t be prouder of her.
She demonstrates the truth in the old
adage that with love and determination
anything is possible, and if I had to choose
a sister-in-law, I don’t think I could have
done any better … than Linda.
